AI Overviews
AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows for some queries, with links to the web pages used to support the answer.
AI Overviews answer many informational queries on the results page, which can reduce clicks to websites while giving cited sources new visibility, so publishers and brands need to track both rankings and citations.
An SEO team finds that 30 of its top 200 informational queries show AI Overviews, checks which of its pages are cited, and updates those guides with direct answers, original data and current dates while tracking clicks in Search Console.
Search Console's Generative AI performance report, available to all sites since 31 August 2026, shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page but no clicks or queries, so traffic impact must still be inferred. Appearance is never guaranteed and summaries can contain errors. Sites can opt out with the Search generative AI control without losing regular snippets, whereas nosnippet removes both.
AI Overviews rolled out to all US users in May 2024 after testing in Search Labs as Search Generative Experience (SGE). Google may use query fan-out, running related searches to find supporting pages, and shows an overview only when it adds value beyond standard results. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no special markup required. Traffic is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, and these answers add to Zero-Click Search.
