Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
The practice of shaping content and brand signals so AI assistants and answer features cite or mention a brand in their responses.
As buyers ask AI assistants for recommendations and comparisons, being cited or named in those answers influences shortlists before any website visit, so AEO extends search strategy to channels that send few clicks.
A B2B software firm lists 40 questions buyers ask during evaluation, publishes concise answers with comparison tables and original test data, adds Organization and FAQ structured data, and tracks monthly how often ChatGPT and Perplexity mention it.
AEO has no standard definition and overlaps heavily with GEO and SEO, while AI systems change often and do not disclose ranking logic. Results vary by prompt, model and user context, and mentions are hard to tie to revenue.
Answer engines retrieve web pages or indexed content, often through search and query fan-out, then generate a response that may cite sources. AEO work combines crawlable, indexable pages, direct answers near the top of sections, clear entity information, Structured Data, consistent brand facts on third-party sites and earned mentions in reputable publications. It overlaps with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Search Experience Optimization (SXO), and Google states its AI features need no special optimization beyond SEO.
