Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI)
An email standard that lets a sending domain publish a verified logo for mailbox providers to show next to its authenticated messages.
A visible logo can make legitimate emails easier to recognize, but BIMI's main value is that it requires strict DMARC enforcement, which protects the domain from spoofing in sales and marketing campaigns.
A company moves DMARC from p=none to p=quarantine with pct=100 over eight weeks, obtains a Verified Mark Certificate for its registered trademark, hosts the PEM file over HTTPS and publishes a TXT record at default._bimi.
Display is decided by each mailbox provider and is not guaranteed. Gmail requires a VMC or CMC, which has an annual cost, and a VMC also needs a registered trademark. BIMI does not improve inbox placement by itself.
The sender publishes a TXT record at default._bimi under its domain with v=BIMI1, an l= tag pointing to a logo in SVG Tiny Portable/Secure format and an a= tag pointing to a mark certificate. Supporting providers show the logo only when the message passes DMARC with a policy of quarantine or reject. Verified Mark Certificates confirm trademark rights, while Common Mark Certificates cover logos without a registration. BIMI builds on DMARC and supports Email Deliverability work.
