Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)
The systematic practice of increasing the share of visitors who complete a desired action through research, hypotheses and controlled testing.
CRO raises revenue from traffic a company already pays for, so a gain in conversion rate lowers acquisition cost per customer across every paid and organic channel at the same time.
A SaaS company sees in session recordings that many trial sign-ups abandon at a phone number field, tests a form without it against the original for three weeks, and adopts it after trial starts rise from 3.0% to 3.6% of visitors.
CRO is limited by traffic volume and test duration, and local wins can reduce lead quality or revenue further down the funnel. Copying tactics from other sites or chasing small button changes rarely matters as much as fixing offer, pricing or message fit.
Conversion rate equals conversions divided by visitors or sessions, multiplied by 100. A CRO program cycles through research with analytics, heatmaps, surveys and Usability Testing; hypothesis writing; prioritization with frameworks such as PIE; experiments through A/B Testing, split URL or multivariate tests; and documentation of results. Changes are judged on the primary Conversion Rate (CVR) plus guardrail metrics such as revenue per visitor.
