Creative Fatigue

The decline in an ad's results after its audience has seen the same or very similar creative too often to keep paying attention.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

Fatigued ads keep spending while returns fall, so campaigns that once hit cost targets quietly become unprofitable; a steady creative pipeline is often cheaper than raising bids or budgets to compensate.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

A retargeting ad set on Meta with one video reaches a frequency of 7 in 14 days, while CTR falls from 1.4% to 0.6% and cost per lead doubles. The team adds 5 new concepts in different formats and widens the audience.

LIMITATIONS

Rising frequency alone does not prove fatigue; seasonality, auction competition or tracking changes can cause the same drop. Platform fatigue flags cover limited formats, and fresh creative will not fix a weak offer or a tiny audience.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

Fatigue shows as falling Click-Through Rate (CTR) and conversion rate with rising cost per result as frequency grows. In Meta Ads Manager, the delivery column labels an ad Creative fatigue when cost per result is at least about twice its past level, and Creative limited for smaller increases. Small audiences, high budgets and few ad variants speed it up. Remedies include rotating varied concepts, broader targeting and Frequency Capping, common in Paid Social.
