Event Tracking
The practice of recording specific user actions, such as clicks, form submissions, video plays or purchases, as named events with parameters.
Pageviews alone do not show whether visitors request demos, download pricing sheets or start trials, so event tracking supplies the actions that conversion reporting, bidding algorithms and funnel analysis depend on.
A B2B site sends gtag('event', 'generate_lead', {form_name: 'demo_request', value: 150, currency: 'USD'}) on form success, marks generate_lead as a key event in GA4, and imports it into Google Ads.
Events fire only where code or triggers exist, so redesigns and single-page navigation often break them unnoticed. Ad blockers, consent refusals and duplicate firing distort counts, and inconsistent naming makes reports hard to compare.
In Google Analytics 4 (GA4), every interaction is an event with a name and optional parameters. Events are automatically collected, sent by enhanced measurement such as Scroll Depth, recommended with predefined names, or custom. They are sent with gtag('event', name, params) placed after the Google tag, or through a tag manager. Key events feed Conversion Rate (CVR) reporting, and DebugView checks events before release.
