Featured Snippet
A search result format that shows an extract from a webpage above or within the standard listings to answer the query directly.
Holding the featured snippet can put a page above the first standard result for question queries, but the displayed answer may satisfy the user without a click, so its value should be measured in clicks as well as visibility.
A team targets "how to calculate customer lifetime value" by adding a 45-word definition and a numbered 4-step formula directly below a matching H2, then checks clicks in Google Search Console and snippet ownership in a rank tracker.
Site owners cannot request or mark up a featured snippet, and Google can change or remove it at any time. The only reliable opt-out is the nosnippet rule, which also removes the page's regular snippet.
Google's systems decide whether a passage from a page would make a good featured snippet for a query and show it with the description before the title link; snippets can also appear inside People Also Ask. A click can scroll users to the quoted section. Owners can lower max-snippet to reduce the chance or use nosnippet and data-nosnippet to block text. Structured Data is not listed as a requirement, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) formats often supply concise answers.
