Gap Analysis

A structured comparison of current practices with a standard or target state that lists what is missing, ranks the gaps by risk and effort, and feeds a remediation roadmap.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

A gap analysis turns a vague compliance or improvement goal into a prioritized list of work, so leaders can decide scope, budget and timing before committing to a certification or transformation program, and avoid spending on areas that already meet the requirement.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

Before pursuing ISO/IEC 42001, a SaaS company answers a structured questionnaire on Clauses 4–10 and the Annex A controls, scores each requirement against evidence, and turns the blocking gaps into a phased roadmap with owners and target dates.

LIMITATIONS

Self-assessments rely on honest answers and tend to overrate maturity when evidence is not checked. A gap analysis shows what is missing, not how hard each fix is to sustain, and it goes stale as systems, teams and requirements change.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

A gap analysis first fixes the reference, such as a standard's clauses and controls, a regulation or an internal target, and the scope being assessed. Each requirement is rated against evidence, often on a scale from not started to implemented and evidenced, and each gap is recorded with its requirement, severity, owner and estimated effort. Results are prioritized, blocking gaps first, and grouped into a phased plan. In ISO certification work it is often called a readiness assessment: optional, but useful before the Stage 1 audit of a Certification Audit, and it feeds the Statement of Applicability (SoA) and the risk treatment plan.
