Key Performance Indicator (KPI)

A quantifiable measure chosen to track progress toward a specific business objective over time, compared against a defined target.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

KPIs focus attention and resources on the few outcomes that matter, so leadership can see whether strategy is working and teams know which numbers their decisions should move.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

A B2B marketing team sets three quarterly KPIs: $1.2 million in sourced pipeline, Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) under $9,000 and a 25% MQL-to-SQL rate, each with an owner, a weekly dashboard and a defined CRM data source.

LIMITATIONS

A metric becomes a KPI only when tied to a goal, and too many KPIs dilute focus. Targets can be gamed, and lagging KPIs such as revenue report problems late, so they work best paired with leading indicators that move earlier.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

A KPI needs a precise formula, data source, time period, owner and target, plus a threshold that triggers action. Leading KPIs, such as pipeline created, help predict outcomes, while lagging KPIs, such as Return on Investment (ROI) or Return on Ad Spend (ROAS), record results after the fact. Dashboards typically show the current value against target and prior period, and KPI trees link company goals to team-level drivers.
