MACH Architecture
An enterprise architecture approach built on Microservices, API-first design, Cloud-native SaaS and Headless front ends.
MACH lets a business replace or add one capability, such as search, checkout or content, without rebuilding the whole platform, but it shifts responsibility for integration and vendor management to the company.
A retailer replaces a monolithic commerce suite in stages: it adds a Headless CMS for content first, then a cloud commerce engine for catalog and cart, connecting both to a React storefront through APIs while the old checkout keeps running.
MACH increases the number of vendors, contracts and integrations, which raises total cost and governance needs for small teams. Migration from monoliths is slow, and much of the guidance comes from vendors that sell MACH products.
Each letter describes a property: Microservices split business functions into independently deployed services; API-first means every function is exposed through an API; Cloud-native means SaaS that scales and updates without customer-managed upgrades; Headless separates the front end from back-end logic so one back end can serve web, apps and devices. MACH is a specific form of Composable Architecture, promoted since 2020 by the MACH Alliance, a not-for-profit industry group.
