Owned Media

Channels and content a brand controls directly, such as its website, blog, email list, app and brand social media accounts.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

Owned channels keep working without paying per impression and hold the customer relationship, such as email subscribers and site visitors, which lowers dependence on rising ad costs and platform rule changes.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

A consultancy publishes a monthly benchmark report on its website, gates the full PDF behind an email form and sends a newsletter to 8,000 subscribers, then uses paid LinkedIn ads only to promote the report launch.

LIMITATIONS

Owned media mostly reaches people who already know the brand, so it needs paid or earned distribution to grow. Social accounts are only partly owned because platforms control reach and rules, and content needs ongoing investment.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

Forrester's paid, owned and earned model defines owned media as channels the brand controls, fully owned such as the website or partly owned such as social profiles. The PESO model adds shared media as a fourth type. Owned assets usually host the conversion step: paid media and Native Advertising drive traffic to them, Earned Media amplifies content created there, and analytics on owned properties provide first-party data.
