Performance Max (PMax)
A goal-based Google Ads campaign type that uses one campaign to serve ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.
PMax can reach converting customers across Google's inventory with one budget, but it gives less channel-level control, so results depend heavily on conversion data quality, product feed quality and clear value goals.
A retailer launches PMax with its Merchant Center feed, three asset groups by product category, a customer list as audience signal, a target ROAS of 400% and brand exclusions, then reviews channel performance and search terms after six weeks.
Automation can favor cheap remarketing or branded traffic and claim conversions that would have happened anyway. Reporting is less granular than in standard campaigns, and weak or inflated conversion tracking leads the system to optimize toward the wrong outcome.
Advertisers supply conversion goals with optional target CPA or ROAS, budgets, asset groups of text, images and video, product feeds and audience signals. Smart Bidding sets bids per auction from predicted conversion likelihood, and Google combines assets into ads for each channel. Search themes, negative keywords, brand exclusions and Final URL expansion shape reach, and exact match keywords in Search campaigns take priority. Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) targets and Enhanced Conversions inform optimization.
