Pipeline Coverage
The ratio of qualified open pipeline value to the sales quota or target for the same period, expressed as a multiple such as 3x.
Coverage gives sales and marketing leaders an early warning: if open pipeline cannot cover the target at historical win rates, there is still time to add pipeline or reset the forecast before the quarter ends.
A team has a $1.2M quarterly quota and $3.6M of qualified pipeline due to close this quarter, so coverage = $3.6M ÷ $1.2M = 3x. With a 25% historical win rate it needs 4x, so it plans $1.2M of extra pipeline.
The common 3x rule assumes roughly a one-in-three win rate and fails for teams with lower conversion. Stale, inflated or wrongly dated opportunities make the ratio look healthy when the forecast is not.
Pipeline coverage is calculated as total qualified pipeline value expected to close in a period divided by the quota for that period, or by remaining quota after closed deals. A weighted version multiplies each stage's value by its historical win rate before summing. The required multiple is roughly the inverse of the win rate, adjusted for slippage. It complements Sales Forecasting and Pipeline Velocity, which add timing and deal speed.
