Product-Led Growth (PLG)
A go-to-market model in which the product itself drives acquisition, conversion and expansion, often through free trials or freemium plans.
PLG can lower acquisition cost and shorten sales cycles for products that users can adopt without help, but it shifts investment from sales headcount to onboarding, product analytics and pricing design.
A scheduling tool offers a free plan for up to 3 users, defines activation as 5 bookings within 7 days, prompts an upgrade when a team adds a fourth user, and alerts sales when an account with 20 or more active users hits a plan limit.
PLG fits poorly with products that need heavy integration, security reviews or committee buying, and free tiers can attract many users who never pay. Larger B2B deals usually still need a sales-assisted motion alongside self-service.
In a PLG motion, users sign up, reach first value quickly and expand use before a purchase decision. Key metrics include signup-to-activation rate, Time to Value (TTV), free-to-paid conversion and product-qualified leads, accounts whose usage signals buying readiness. Pricing usually scales with seats or usage, and in-app prompts, onboarding checklists and product analytics replace parts of the classic sales funnel. Many Software as a Service (SaaS) companies pair PLG with sales-assisted motions.
