CONCEPT
SEARCH OPTIMIZATION

Rich Results

Search result listings that show extra visual or interactive elements, such as ratings, prices or images, generated from structured data on the page.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

Rich results take more space on the results page and give searchers price, availability or rating details before they click, which can raise click-through rate for product, event, job and recipe pages that qualify.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

An ecommerce site adds Product JSON-LD with name, image, offers.price, priceCurrency and availability to 2,400 product templates, validates a sample in the Rich Results Test, then monitors Search Console enhancement reports for errors after release.

LIMITATIONS

Valid markup only makes a page eligible; Google decides whether to show a rich result and has reduced or retired some types over time. Markup describing content that is not visible on the page can lead to a manual action.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

Google reads Structured Data written in JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa, using Schema Markup vocabulary from schema.org, and checks that each type includes its required properties and follows the general and feature-specific guidelines. Supported features include Article, Breadcrumb, Event, Job posting, Product, Recipe, Review snippet and Video. Google recommends JSON-LD and offers the Rich Results Test and Search Console reports for validation. A Featured Snippet is different: it is extracted from page text and needs no markup.
