CONCEPT
SEARCH OPTIMIZATION

Search Engine Results Page (SERP)

The page a search engine returns for a query, combining organic results, ads, local packs, AI summaries and other search features.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

The layout of the results page decides how much attention an organic listing can win, so a first position below several ads, a map pack and an AI Overview may bring far fewer visits than the rank suggests.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

Before targeting "accounting software for nonprofits", an SEO lead records the SERP: 3 ads, an AI Overview, a People Also Ask box and 9 organic results, mostly comparison lists, and decides to build a comparison page rather than a product page.

LIMITATIONS

SERPs vary by location, device, language and time, so a single screenshot or rank tracker reading is a sample, not what every user sees. Rank position alone ignores how features push organic results further down the page.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

Google assembles each results page after crawling, indexing and ranking, and chooses features based on the query: text results with title links, snippets and sitelinks, rich results built from structured data, image and video results, and exploration features such as related searches. Elements like the Featured Snippet and AI Overviews change how Click-Through Rate (CTR) is spread across the page and usually reflect the dominant Search Intent.
