Smart Bidding

Google Ads automated bid strategies that use machine learning to set a bid in each auction for conversions or conversion value.

BUSINESS RELEVANCE

Smart Bidding shifts day-to-day bid management from people to the platform, so results depend on the quality of conversion data and targets the business supplies rather than on manual bid changes.

IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLE

A lead-generation account records 120 qualified leads a month with offline conversion imports. It moves from manual CPC to Target CPA at $85, close to its historical CPA, and evaluates results after a full month instead of daily.

LIMITATIONS

The model optimizes toward whatever is counted as a conversion, so tracking cheap micro-actions produces cheap but useless results. Low volume, sudden tracking changes and short tests make performance unstable and hard to judge.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION

The Smart Bidding strategies are Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value. For each auction, models trained on account and cross-account data combine signals such as device, location, time, remarketing lists, language, browser and the actual query to predict conversion likelihood or value and set a bid. Conversion tracking is required, and Enhanced Conversions improve signal quality. Cost per Acquisition (CPA) and Target ROAS (tROAS) are the usual targets.
