Topic Cluster
A group of interlinked pages in which a broad pillar page covers a subject and supporting pages cover its subtopics in depth.
Topic clusters turn scattered blog posts into a planned content library, which makes gaps easier to see, reduces overlapping articles and gives buyers a clear path from a broad question to detailed answers.
A payroll software firm builds a pillar page on payroll compliance and 12 cluster pages on topics such as overtime rules and payslip retention. Each cluster page links to the pillar with descriptive anchor text, and the pillar links to all 12.
A cluster does not create authority by structure alone: thin or repetitive cluster pages can compete with each other for the same queries, and links between loosely related pages confuse readers more than they help rankings.
The model is also called hub and spoke. The pillar targets a broad head term and summarizes each subtopic, while every cluster page targets one narrower query or question. Internal Linking ties the set together: the pillar links out to each cluster page and each cluster page links back with descriptive anchors, which helps crawlers find the pages and understand their relationship. It often maps onto a Silo Structure and supports Topical Authority.
