Customer Segmentation
Dividing customers or prospects into groups with shared traits or behavior so offers, messages and service levels can differ by group.
Segments decide where budget, sales time and product effort go; treating a high-value enterprise account the same as a free-tier user wastes spend and misses expansion and churn signals.
A software vendor groups customers by company size, plan and 90-day product usage into 5 segments. A GA4 audience of trial users who viewed pricing twice in 7 days is shared to Google Ads for a targeted demo offer.
Segments drift as behavior changes, so static lists age quickly. Very fine segments become too small to act on or measure, and grouping by sensitive traits can create discrimination and privacy risks.
Segments can be firmographic or demographic, behavioral, value-based such as RFM scoring, needs-based or tied to Lifecycle Stage, and may be built with rules or clustering models. In GA4, segments are retroactive filters used in explorations, while audiences are memberships evaluated as data arrives and shared with ad platforms. A Customer Data Platform (CDP) syncs segments to tools, and Cohort Retention tests whether they behave differently.
