Bounce Rate

proprietary metric

Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions classified as non-engaged by a specific analytics platform; in Google Analytics 4, it is the inverse of engagement rate.

Technical explanation

In GA4, bounce rate equals the percentage of sessions that were not engaged sessions. An engaged session lasts longer than 10 seconds, contains a key event, or includes at least two page or screen views. Therefore, GA4 bounce rate is not simply the percentage of visitors who view one page and leave. Other analytics products may define the metric differently, so the platform and configuration must be stated.

Business relevance

Bounce rate can highlight mismatches among acquisition intent, page experience, content relevance, and measurement configuration. It is most useful when segmented by landing page, source, device, and purpose and interpreted alongside conversions and engagement.

Implementation example

A campaign landing page shows a high GA4 bounce rate but strong completed-form conversions. The team checks key-event configuration before assuming the page is failing and compares results by traffic source and device.

Limitations and common misconceptions

A high bounce rate is not automatically negative, especially for pages designed to answer a question quickly. Comparisons across platforms or configurations may be invalid, and implementation errors can materially distort the metric.
