Crawlability is the extent to which search-engine crawlers can discover, request, render, and follow the pages and resources of a website.

Technical explanation

Crawlability depends on reachable links, server responses, robots directives, authentication, JavaScript rendering, redirects, URL design, performance, and crawl capacity. A page must be accessible to a crawler before its content can be evaluated for indexing.

Business relevance

Poor crawlability prevents valuable content and updates from being discovered efficiently, wastes crawl resources, and makes technical SEO work ineffective.

Implementation example

A glossary exposes stable HTML links to every term, returns successful responses, avoids blocked rendering resources, and includes canonical URLs in an XML sitemap.

Limitations and common misconceptions

Crawlability does not guarantee indexation or ranking. A crawlable page may still be duplicate, low value, noindexed, or excluded by search-engine quality and canonicalisation decisions.
