Information architecture defines content models, taxonomies, hierarchies, navigation systems, labels, metadata and search relationships. It is informed by user research, content analysis and organisational constraints, then tested through methods such as card sorting and tree testing.

A coherent architecture reduces search and navigation friction, improves content governance, supports scalable publishing and makes products easier for people and machines to understand.

A service website groups offerings by customer need, defines a controlled taxonomy, creates predictable navigation labels, and validates the hierarchy with tree testing before implementation.

Limitations and common misconceptions

A neat hierarchy does not guarantee usability. User needs can conflict, labels age, content grows across channels, and a single taxonomy may not serve every audience or task.
