Lifecycle Stage

N/Aconcept

Also known as: Customer lifecycle stage; funnel stage; CRM lifecycle stage

A lifecycle stage is a governed classification representing where a person, account or opportunity currently sits in an organisation's defined commercial relationship.

Technical explanation

Stages such as subscriber, lead, qualified lead, opportunity and customer are implemented as controlled CRM values with entry, exit and reversal rules. They differ from granular activity statuses and should align with process ownership and reporting logic.

Business relevance

Consistent lifecycle stages support segmentation, automation, hand-offs, funnel measurement and a shared language across marketing, sales and customer teams.

Implementation example

A CRM moves a contact to marketing-qualified only after agreed fit and intent criteria are met, records the timestamp and prevents unrelated email clicks from changing the stage.

Limitations and common misconceptions

Stage names are organisation-specific and rarely represent a perfectly linear journey. Unclear criteria, forced forward-only movement or mixing person and deal states produces misleading reporting.
