Revenue Operations (RevOps)
RevOpspracticeAlso known as: Rev Ops
A strategic function that aligns sales, marketing, and customer success operations under a unified data model, process framework, and technology stack to drive predictable, efficient revenue growth.
Technical explanation
Revenue Operations consolidates the operational functions traditionally siloed across sales operations, marketing operations, and customer success operations. RevOps teams own the shared technology stack (CRM, marketing automation, analytics, data enrichment), unified reporting and attribution models, process design across the full customer lifecycle, and data governance standards that ensure consistency across revenue-generating functions. The function typically reports to a Chief Revenue Officer or VP of Revenue Operations and is measured on metrics including pipeline velocity, win rate, customer acquisition cost, net revenue retention, and forecast accuracy.
Business relevance
Organisations with aligned revenue operations report higher win rates, faster sales cycles, and more accurate forecasting. By eliminating operational silos between sales, marketing, and customer success, RevOps reduces friction in the customer journey, improves data quality for decision-making, and enables leadership to identify revenue bottlenecks across the full funnel rather than optimising each function in isolation.
Implementation example
A mid-market SaaS company creates a RevOps function by merging its sales operations and marketing operations teams under a single leader. The combined team standardises lifecycle stage definitions, implements unified attribution reporting, and creates shared dashboards that track pipeline velocity from first touch through renewal — eliminating the finger-pointing between marketing-sourced and sales-sourced pipeline.
Limitations and common misconceptions
RevOps transformation requires cultural change as much as operational restructuring. Teams accustomed to independent operation may resist centralised process governance. Technology stack consolidation can be complex and expensive, particularly when legacy systems have deep integrations. RevOps maturity takes time — organisations should not expect immediate results from structural reorganisation alone.
