Urchin Tracking Module (UTM)

UTM

Also known as: UTM parameter; UTM tag; campaign parameter; campaign tracking code

A Urchin Tracking Module parameter is a standardised utm_-prefixed query parameter added to a destination URL so analytics tools can classify campaign traffic.

Technical explanation

Common parameters include utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign, with utm_term, utm_content, and additional platform-supported fields used where needed. When a tagged link is clicked, parameter values are passed in the URL and recorded by compatible analytics systems for acquisition reporting.

Business relevance

Consistent UTM governance makes channel and campaign reporting more reliable, supports performance comparisons, and reduces ambiguous traffic classifications.

Implementation example

A webinar link is tagged with utm_source=linkedin, utm_medium=paid_social, and utm_campaign=q4_security_webinar under a documented lowercase naming convention.

Limitations and common misconceptions

UTM values are user-editable, case-sensitive in many reports, and do not prove causation. Inconsistent naming fragments data, public URLs expose values, and internal-link tagging can overwrite acquisition context.
