User Experience (UX)

UXconcept

Also known as: User experience design; experience design; UX design

User experience is a person’s perceptions and responses resulting from the anticipated or actual use of a system, product, or service.

Technical explanation

UX emerges from the interaction between users, goals, context, content, interface behaviour, service processes, accessibility, performance, and prior expectations. It includes pragmatic outcomes such as effectiveness and efficiency as well as emotional and experiential responses across the full journey.

Business relevance

UX affects adoption, task completion, support demand, conversion, retention, trust, and brand perception. Treating it as a system outcome connects design quality to operational and commercial performance.

Implementation example

A bank maps the end-to-end mortgage journey, observes customers and staff, redesigns forms and status communications, and measures completion, errors, support contacts, and satisfaction.

Limitations and common misconceptions

UX is broader than visual design or interface usability and cannot be reduced to a single universal score. Findings are contextual, and improving one user group’s experience may introduce trade-offs for another.
