ISO/IEC 42001:2023 — AI Management Systems
standardAlso known as: ISO 42001
The first international standard specifying requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an AI management system within organisations.
Technical explanation
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 provides a framework for organisations to manage the development, provision, and use of AI systems responsibly. It follows the Annex SL high-level structure common to other ISO management system standards (such as ISO 27001 for information security), making it integrable with existing management systems. The standard covers AI policy, risk assessment, objectives, operational planning, performance evaluation, and continual improvement. It addresses AI-specific concerns including data quality, model transparency, bias management, human oversight, and third-party AI component governance.
Business relevance
As regulatory frameworks for AI mature globally (EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF), organisations face increasing pressure to demonstrate responsible AI governance. ISO/IEC 42001 certification provides a recognised, auditable framework for meeting these expectations. Early adoption positions organisations ahead of regulatory timelines and provides structured assurance to clients, partners, and regulators that AI systems are governed systematically rather than ad hoc.
Implementation example
A financial services company seeking to deploy AI-driven credit scoring implements ISO/IEC 42001 as the governance framework. They establish an AI management system that includes risk assessment for bias in training data, human oversight procedures for model decisions affecting credit applications, and a continuous monitoring programme for model drift and fairness metrics.
Limitations and common misconceptions
ISO/IEC 42001 is a management system standard — it defines what organisations must do to govern AI responsibly, but it does not prescribe specific technical implementations or performance benchmarks. Certification demonstrates process maturity, not the technical quality of any individual AI system. The standard is relatively new, and auditor expertise, certification body availability, and industry-specific interpretation guidance are still maturing.
